Linguistic and Cultural Problems in Machine Translation of Classical Arabic Poetry: al-Mutanabbi's Wisdom Poetry as a Case-in-Point

This study aimed to identify the degree of availability of linguistic and cultural problems in machine translation of classical Arabic poetry into English locale poetry, and if there were any differences in the degree of availability of those problems attributed to the type of machine systems, and translation mode (machine, human). To achieve the objectives of the study, a comparatively analytical-descriptive methodology was used. The society of the study was composed of all (70) wisdom verses written by al-Mutanabbi where a sample of 59 verses was purposively selected to be translated by three machine systems (Google Translate, Bing Translator, Yandex Translator), selected purposively due to their popularity among translation specialists. Then, a four-level assessment scale, comprising seven parameters, was designed to assess the machine translations of those verses. After testing its validity and reliability, the produced machine translations were introduced to a focus group of four raters, specialized translation, at Ibb and Taiz universities, Yemen, to assess them, and then compare them with the human translation of Fairooz (2024). After analysing data statistically, a number of findings were revealed, most importantly: the overall level of availability of linguistic and cultural problems in machine translation of classical Arabic poetry into English locale poetry was very high (M = 23.83, % = 85.10). Accordingly, a number of recommendations were introduced to those concerned in translation and developers of machine translation systems, as well.
