Abstract

This study aimed to study the traditional architecture and the basic units of building Ibb Old City and its distinguished traditional residential patterns for eliciting values, concepts, and architecture solutions for both climate and environment conditions, the traditional architecture of Ibb Old City was distinguished by. A field and theoretical research approach was used in this study, using a comparative architecture analysis approach. The study was divided into four main areas, namely planning Ibb Old City, traditional residential buildings in Ibb Old City, modern urbanization and its relation with the architecture and blueprint environment in Ibb City, and modern residential buildings in Ibb City and its adequacy with the surrounding environment. The study revealed a number of findings; the most important ones were as follows. The traditional architecture in Ibb Old City represented technical aspects which in turn made it unique and adequate with the surrounding environment, expressing the values, concepts and architecture origins emanated from the environment; the case that distinguished it from the modern architecture and its housing system. The urbanization outside the fences of Ibb Old City showed a lack of constants which were imposed and developed by the characteristics of the local character and Islamic values.
