Abstract

This study aimed to identify the differences between the two sexes in the levels of preparing information in mathematics and learned helplessness with first secondary school students. The sample of the study was composed of 160 students of the first secondary school, 91 males and 69 females, from Mesratah City, Libya, in the school year 2004- 2005.The study was ranged into four sections. Section I was about ''information preparation'', Section II was about ''learned helplessness '', Section III dealt with the study sample and test preparation, equipments, and procedures, and Section IV dealt with analysing and discussing data. The study revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of both male and female students of the first secondary school in the level of preparing information in mathematics in favour of females; there were significant differences between both sexes in the level of the learned helplessness; there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of both male and female students of the first secondary school in the two levels of surface and deep information preparation in mathematics concerning their learned helplessness in favour of the surface level.
