Economic and Social Situations of Yemeni Teachers of Secondary School Education and their Relationship with their Professional Performance

Abstract

This study aimed to know the economic and social situations of Yemeni teachers of secondary school education, the level of their performance, and the relationship of their professional performance with the variables of the study: sex, years of experience, relationship between teachers and officials. A correlative descriptive approach was used in this study. The sample was composed of two categories: teachers (838 males and 1022 females) who worked at secondary schools in Capital Secretariat, and an administrative stuff of headmasters and deputies (192 males and 168 females). Two research tools were used: a questionnaire, administered to teachers, and a measurement for evaluating teachers' performance administered to the administrative stuff. Based on those two tools, the real sample represented 90% of the study society. A number of findings were revealed in this study; the most important ones are: the secondary school teachers suffered from deteriorating economic situations due to low wages received; there were statistically significant differences at the level (0.001) between males and females in economic and social situations in favour of females; there was a low social estimation for teachers; and their professional performance was law.
