Abstract

This paper aimed to study the language of poetry with Wadhah Al-Yamen, the Yemeni poet in the Umayyad era. It was divided into three sections. Section I addressed the dictionary of poetry; Section II addressed the sources of the poet’s language and linguistic use; and Section III addressed the artistic techniques used. A number of conclusions were introduced in this study; most notably, the poet’s language was characterized by a rich and diverse poetic lexicon based on four verbal areas: words of love, Islamic words, words of nature, and words of war; and the poet was able to employ those words artistically in expressing his poetic experiences; the poet used the language of heritage through quoting many vocabularies, structures, and images from the poetic heritage; and his influence by pre-Islamic poets was clear which was manifested by following them in many aspects of his language and style.
