The State and Political Opposition in Yemen during the period between 1918 and 1948: A Historical Study of Thought and Politics

Abstract

The study aims to evaluate the ideology of political opposition and assess the political trajectory of intellectual visions during the period between 1918 and 1948, which culminated in the downfall of the ruling monarchy. The philosophical approach was employed with the support of an interpretive political methodology. The study is divided into an introduction and three main sections. The first section examined the formation of Yemen and the ideology of state administration from 1918 to 1948. The second section focused on the emergence of peaceful opposition and the confrontation with the ruling regime from 1918 to 1948. The third section explored the opposition and the fall of Imam Yahya in 1948. The study findings showed that the racist and sectarian policies practiced by Imam Yahya and his opposition partners accelerated his downfall and leveraged various Zaidi, Shafi'i, and Hashemite youth forces to stand united and used violent means to kill him It was also concluded that,Crown Prince Prince Ahmed, nevertheless,  succeeded in suppressing the revolutionary opposition movement within three weeks and proved to be more open to the outside world than his father.
