Abstract

The phenomenon of hostages has deep roots in the history of mankind, However, it has emerged during the struggle among Islamic forces and Christian in the Near East era as a natural result of the large number of peaceful and military relations as well as the complexity of that relations among those forces. Therefore, this study will address the definition of hostages phenomenon, historical roots, motivations, main stages, fields, categories of the hostages, social status, treatment of the hostages, conditions and places of detention, fate of the hostages, ways of their release, effects of detention,  and consequences.
