The effectiveness of literature circles in promoting literary appreciation skills among grade 10 female students in Damt, Al-Dhali' Governorate

Abstract

     The present study examined experimenting the effectiveness of literature circles in promoting literary appreciation, after teaching some selected literary texts to grade 10 female students, and comparing the results obtained with the traditional method of teaching. In order to do that the researchers used the descriptive procedure to prepare data for the study (literary appreciation measurement test). The researcher also used the quasi-experimental procedure-after validating study's instruments- by applying the two instruments to the participants, 60 female students who were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group. Pre-application results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference at the level of 0.05 between the mean score of the experimental and control groups. This showed that the variables of the two groups were equivalent. In the experimental group, students were taught using the literature circles strategy for 12 classes, whereas in the control group students were taught through the traditional method of teaching. After the experimental treatment, the instrument was post-applied to the two groups of the study. Results of the study showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean score of the female students' results of the experimental and control groups in the post-application of the literary appreciation test compared to the results of pre-application, and the effect size was large, 84%, which was a high value indicating that the experimental treatment (literature circle) was largely effective on literary appreciation as a whole. The study offered some related recommendations and suggestions, which should be considered by educators, teachers, and students.
